Fashion Industry Insiders Dish: My Most Embarrassing Fashion Week Moment

Here’s the thing about fashion week: it’s ripe for embarrassing moments.

Why? Everyone gets dressed to the nines, wears their highest heels, and is so worried about how they look, and how everyone else thinks they look, that when something goes awry cheeks instantly go bright red. And it doesn’t help that everyone is looking down at their phones when they should be looking at the rope of wires that’s about to trip them. We’ve spent the last few days poling everyone from editors to stylists to designers for their most embarrassing moments. And they really are embarrassing.

Read about Simon Doonan having his fly unzipped at a very inopportune time, Jenna Lyons getting moved from her front row seat, Betsey Johnson’s g-string slip, and many, many, more (including my own). Remember YM? Consider this the “Say Anything” for the fashion industry.

Peter Som Fall 2012: Cleansing The Color Palate

“It’s a palate cleanser as I was really focusing on the line of the clothes,” says Peter Som of the 7-look long whiteout—sheer white nylon chiffon and organza dresses alternating with white silk crepe tuxedo shirts and ivory flannel pants layered with fuzzy ivory Mongolian lamb or lacquered wool tweed coats—that opened his Fall 2012 collection.

Though color emerged for the remainder of the show, the all-white looks at the beginning were quite a departure for the designer, considering he is known for his bold color combinations. Case in point: a number of the audience members were sporting some of Som’s photo-real, multi-colored floral items from the Spring 2012 collection.

On day 2, our Street Style cam caught up with some definite head-turners, including Teen Vogue‘s Laurel Pantin, model Aline Weber and Opening Ceremony buyer Kate Foley, and some other stylemaking citizens–including one with some serious flexibility.

M.Patmos Fall 2012: Quality Over Quantity

Most designers send upwards of 45 looks out during a runway show, but for some—like M. Patmos—quality trumps quantity. For her fifteen AW/12 offerings, she wants you to know that the devil is in the details—and the versatile styling.

Case in point: A cotton and leather zip-away t-shirt/shift dress hybrid, which was layered over a long sleeve reversible mesh dress—one look/two pieces that could create four totally different outfits. And thanks to the oversize pockets on the tee/frock, a purse is entirely optional. One cardigan with pseudo-sheer shoulders and sleeves doubled as a top, and another favorite multipurpose piece was the knit and fur scarf with clever and convenient hideaway pockets—a plush place to keep your mitts warm, rendering gloves unnecessary.

Would You Rather…? The Holy Supermodels Edition

Religion has been a theme of many a fashion editorial, but it’s rare that a magazine with as broad a reach as W would publish two similar stories in a three year span.

W’s November 2009 issue, branded the art issue, featured Linda Evangelista doing her best Virgin Mary impersonation. Come 2012, W recycled their “Holier than Thou” motif with an editorial featuring Kate Moss with a cross between her legs.

Kimberly Ovitz Fall 2012: Inspired by Warriors

Backstage before the show, designer Kimberly Ovitz warned us this collection would be “a lot darker” than past seasons, and indeed it was: The collection was almost entirely all-black, with a few grey, olive and brown looks thrown in for good measure.

Ovitz told us she was inspired by the figure of “the warrior,” and that the collection was all about embodying the warrior’s attributes: “Perseverance, vitality, vigor,” she said. It’s hard to say whether or not the clothing conveyed such intangible attributes, but we will say that the belts and necklaces made out of what looked like human hair did seem to send the message: “Don’t fuck with me or I’ll scalp you.”

Honor Fall 2012: The Bold and the Beautiful

It’s no secret that we are big Honor fans here at Fashionista. Just about every collections Giovanna Randall has shown thus far in her relatively young career as a designer has been so beautiful and elegant that it takes our breath away. Her fall outing, inspired by “this preppy boy on his semester abroad in college and meeting an exotic woman from South or Central America and how their styles mix together” was no exception. Not that it was more of the same. The prints–a big rose print and a geometric art deco print–were new and as Randall explained, she “took it a little bid bolder” this season.

That boldness could be seen in strong reds and purples and gorgeous big box-shaped bags. Still, she mainly stuck to wearable, classic silhouettes, as she tends to do. We were actually surprised by the lack of red carpet-worthy gowns, considering her burgeoning popularity with Hollywood starlets like Kirsten Dunst and Shailene Woodley, who was in the front row looking like the low-key, five-finger shoe wearing, former American Apparel employee she truly is.

Whit Fall 2012: Whitney Pozgay Takes Brooklyn Girls Over The Moon

You’ve got to hand it to Kate Spade’s niece Whitney Pozgay: Girl knows how to take the Berry Street hipster just outside of her comfort zone. In the four seasons since the Phoenix-born, Brooklyn-based designer (who honed her chops at her aunt’s uptown bastion of style and as lead womenswear designer for Steven Alan) launched her eponymous line, she’s centered her presentations of quirky-chic separates around geographical themes ranging from ’60s California surf culture to her childhood in the Southwest.

So what then is the focus for Pozgay’s first-ever runway show? “Each collection the Whit girl goes somewhere different, and this time she goes the furthest from her natural habitat,” the designer laughs. “Outer space!”

Rebecca Romijn on Why Models Should Start Working at 18 and the Downside of Model Alliances

So the big model news this Fashion Week, aside from Karlie Kloss not walking any shows, is that the CFDA’s new guidelines require catwalkers to show proof that they’re 16 or older in order to walk the shows. How this will be enforced, we’re still not sure. Ford has already sent out a statement confirming they are repping models under the age of 16. And it’s likely other agencies are too–and sending those girls out on castings.

Well, after the Cynthia Rowley show last night, we spotted former model and now actress Rebecca Romijn and figured we’d get an expert opinion on the matter.

“I think that models should be 18 or older,” the stunner told us emphatically.
